First, can I say I am a bit disappointed in the LACK of paper mache instruction in Colorado public schools! Growing up in N. VA I had to do a few paper mache projects throughout my school years. Enough to garner a healthy dislike of the slimy process. When Nathan got the assignment to do a paper mache mask of an ancient Greek god, I quickly said “Jeff, help him get it started”. The reply was “I don’t know how to do paper mache!” I was shocked that Jeff never did paper mache in school. Upon talking to friends I have found this to be unique—as other adults remember with horror the slimy feel of paper mache ‘paste’. Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps—like nails on a chalkboard! Colorado kids are being deprived!
Ok, but back to the project. We blew up a balloon, and he started to get it all put together. One of the requirements was that it had to be 3D-ish, with eyebrows, nose, chin, cheekbones, etc. When the basic mask was dried enough we popped the balloon, cut an opening and then had some fun with it.
